How to connect to an SFTP server using FileZilla
In this article, we’ll show you how to connect to an SFTP server, a secure way to transfer files, using FileZilla.
Please ensure you have downloaded FileZilla and the program is open before proceeding.

Note: Before you can login with SFTP, make sure that SFTP or SSH access is activated in your one.com Control Panel.
How to connect
- Navigate to SSH & SFTP under Advanced settings in your Control Panel, where you can find your connection details. Alternatively, you can also click here to open the section directly.
- Under SSH & SFTP Administration, your domain's specific connection details are displayed.
- Open FileZilla and enter the connection details from the Control Panel in the required fields: Host, Username, Password and Port.
- Click Quickconnect to connect to the server.
If this is the first time you log in using SFTP on this device, you'll see a popup message saying that the server's host key is unknown and asking whether you trust it. Click "OK" to approve the connection.
Forgot your password?
No worries! Just follow the steps in our guide Create or change your SFTP password.
If successfully connected, your files and folders will appear on the right side of the screen.
Troubleshooting connection issues
If the connection fails, a status list below the top bar provides more information. We recommend double-checking:
- The entered server address
- The username and password
- Ensure SFTP/SSH access is activated in your Control Panel
- No firewall or security software is blocking the connection
For domains on new servers: Locate the correct root folder
If your hosting is on our new servers, there’s a specific method for identifying the correct root folder for each domain or subdomain. This helps you select the correct folder when connecting via SFTP.
1. Via the landingpage on your one.com Controlpanel, go to Subdomains.
2. Under Folder, you’ll see a name, like /webroots/5dfa4a5d. The series of numbers and letters after /webroots/ is the root folder name for that specific domain or subdomain.
3. Once connected via SFTP in your client, you’ll see folders with these same names.
For the example in the screenshots, if you're transferring files for the subdomain called test, the folder you should open to upload your website files is 5dfa4a5d.
