When sending emails daily and maybe even using your domain and emails for your business, security is very important. In addition to activating your spam and virus filters, using DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) can help improve the security of your email accounts. In this article, we explain what it is and how it works.
- Do I need to set up DKIM for my one.com email accounts?

Do I need to set up DKIM for my one.com email accounts?
No.
When using one.com's name servers and mail servers, DKIM is automatically activated on your domain, which means you don't need to do anything. All emails you send from your domain will automatically be sent with a digital, encrypted signature. To protect you against spoofing and phishing attacks, our mail servers also always check all emails that are sent to you for the digital DKIM signature.
What is DKIM and what does it do?
DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is an email authentication method. When DKIM is enabled it adds a digital signature to every email that is sent. This signature is invisible to the sender and recipient but can be identified by mail servers. The mail servers can check for the digital signature to verify that the email address is indeed connected to the domain that it claims it is and that it is allowed to send emails from that domain.
Why do I need DKIM?
DKIM helps you in two ways - when you're sending emails and when you're receiving emails.
When you send an email DKIM adds an invisible signature that can be used by the receiver's email provider to validate your email. This means that your email is less likely to be accidentally flagged as spam. It also means that you can protect your domain against malicious emails that claim to be sent on your behalf.
When you receive emails the mail servers automatically check if the email that is sent to you is using a digital signature to verify itself. If not, the emails will in most cases be flagged as spam. This is one way to protect you against spam emails, spoofing and phishing attacks.
How can I add DKIM if I'm not using one.com's name servers?
If you're not using one.com's name servers but are using our mail servers, you can still add DKIM to your domain. You need to add 4 specific CNAME records. Please contact our support to get the exact values you need for your domain. We're happy to help you!
At the other host, go to the DNS settings and add the record type: CNAME. Add 4 new CNAME records with the values you received from our support. It usually takes 240 minutes for this DNS change to take effect over the internet; they will not work immediately.
