From August 17th, 2021, we will no longer support the TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1.
In this guide, we explain why it is necessary that we stop supporting old TLS versions for email, who will be affected, and how you can prepare for the change.
- What is TLS?
- Why will TLS 1.0 and 1.1 no longer be supported?

Note: You will always be able to use our one.com Webmail to send and receive emails.
What is TLS?
TLS stands for Transport Layer Security and is an encryption protocol that is better known as SSL. TLS encrypts communications on the internet, ensuring your privacy and security. When it comes to emails, TLS ensures that emails are sent securely between the sender and the recipient and prevents others from being able to read the emails that you are sending.
You could compare sending an email using TLS encryption with sending a letter in a sealed envelope. While sending without TLS is like sending a letter without an envelope, allowing everyone to be able to read it.
Why will TLS 1.0 and 1.1 no longer be supported?
It is necessary to stop supporting TLS 1.0 and 1.1. to make sure that we can continuously provide you with the highest security for your email communication.
TLS 1.0 and 1.1 have been around for a long time - since 1999 and 2006 respectively - and have become outdated. The newest TLS version is TLS 1.3 and was released in 2018. With the latest version, vulnerabilities of the previous versions have been eliminated which means that the security of the latest version is significantly higher compared to the older versions. Using TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3, therefore, makes sending and receiving emails more secure towards hackers.
Since March 2020, older TLS versions are no longer being supported by browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox for website encryption via HTTPS. Microsoft announced in 2018 that they will stop supporting TLS 1.0 and 1.1. To follow up on industry standards, one.com will in August 2021 also discontinue support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1.
Will this change impact me?
Only older devices and computers, that don't support TLS 1.2 or higher, will be affected. If your mail client is up to date and you are using one of the latest operating systems on your device, this change won't impact you.
