In this article, we explain what ICANN is. We also answer why you might have received an ICANN-related email.
- What is ICANN?
- Why did I receive an email about my domain's expiration/renewal?
- Why did I receive an email about having to verify my domain's email?
What is ICANN?
ICANN is a non-profit organisation that manages the internet. They help keep the internet stable and secure and decide all top-level domains and name servers policies.
All domain registrars, like one.com, need to comply with the rules set by ICANN, for example:
- Require customers to agree with their terms.
- Publish information in the WHOIS and make sure it stays up to date.
- Inform registrants when their domain is about to expire.
- Sending verification emails to registrants to keep the domain email up-to-date.
one.com is an ICANN accredited domain registrar. This means that we are fulfilling the requirements set by ICANN. If you want to learn more about the role and function of ICANN, check out their website.
Why did I receive an email about my domain's expiration/renewal?
Don't worry; as long as you have an active subscription with one.com, we will automatically renew the domain for another year. We're sending you this email to comply with ICANN's "Expired Registration Recovery Policy" (ERRP).
In short, the ERRP requires us to notify you - as the registrant of the domain - about the date your domain will expire if it's not renewed. This means you might receive this mail even if you have already paid.
Why did I receive an email about having to verify my domain's email?
This is a requirement from ICANN to make sure the domain email is up-to-date. We need to send a verification email to all customers with a gTLD domain (e.g. .com, .net and .org domains). To verify your email, please click the verification button in the email:
When do we send the verification email?
- When changes are made to the registrant's contact details.
- When we notice that the registrant email is not in use.
- Once a year to ensure the domain details are up to date.
The email is sent to the registrant email, which in some cases is different from the contact email.
Note: Without this verification, existing domains will be suspended, and new domains will not be activated. We are sorry for any inconveniences this might cause, and our priority will be to help you get your domain up and running as soon as possible if it has been suspended.
