These days, many people are interested in breaking into your online accounts - including your account at one.com. Our 24/7 security personnel do an extensive job of keeping unwanted breaches at bay. Still, there are things that you yourself can do to enhance the security of your account and prevent unwanted break-ins.
In this guide, you’ll find an overview of four primary things you can do to protect your account. We recommend that you go through this guide and use it as a checklist. If you want to know more about one of the topics, please follow the relevant links or contact our support.
- Make sure you use a strong password
- Enable two-step verification
- Keep your contact email address up to date
- Use antivirus
1. Make sure you use a strong password
When it comes to online security, one of the simplest yet most important things to be aware of is the quality of your passwords. Simply having a password on an account is not enough, as “weak” passwords can sometimes be cracked quite easily. Hackers can utilise different types of software for this purpose, and the right software will be able to go through a vast number of words and combinations until it comes up with the right match for your account.
Therefore, we strongly recommend that you follow these three rules when creating your password. If you do this, you will make it much harder for hackers to gain access to your one.com account:
- Create a complex password
There are different ways to ensure complexity, but generally, you should aim to have a password of a certain length encompassing different characters. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. You can also use a sentence and twist its wording to increase the complexity. There are many small tricks you can use. Read more about some of them and see detailed examples here.
- Make sure your password is unique
When you have created a complex password, you should only use it for your one.com Control Panel login. You should also avoid using a variant of another password or reuse an old password.
- Change your password regularly
Since passwords can end up on the black market, you should make sure to update your password regularly and not share it with anyone. For more on how to protect your existing password, please see this guide.
2. Enable two-step verification
Even if some passwords are more challenging to crack than others, there is no one perfect password that cannot be guessed. On top of a strong password, we encourage you to activate two-step verification for your Control Panel login.
Two-step verification is a handy tool to add on top of your password, as it relies on a unique identifier that only you have access to. After entering your password, you will - depending on which app you use - either get a one-time code sent to you, which you will then enter on the login page, or be asked to swipe right in the one.com Companion app. This means that hackers will ultimately be unable to log into your account as they do not have access to your possessions or unique identifiers, such as your phone or your fingerprint.
You can read more about two-step verification here, and you can also check out our step-by-step guide for specific instructions on how to enable two-step verification for your Control Panel login.
3. Keep your contact email address up to date
The contact email address is the registered email address on your one.com account. It’s the email address on which you receive the annual renewal invoice from us, and it’s also the address that acts as your username for the Control Panel login.
Always keep your email address up to date and make sure you use an account that you have access to.
If you lose access to your Control Panel and need to change the password, you will need access to this email account to receive a reset link from us. This also applies in rare instances where someone may have hacked your Control Panel; if this happens, we will ask you to change your password right away. We cannot reset the password in any other way without changing the email address itself manually.
If you presently have access to your Control Panel and want to change the current contact email address, you can find more information about this in our guide on how to change your contact email address. If you do not have access to your Control Panel or your contact email address, you can check our guide on how to change the contact email address without logging in.
4. Use antivirus
Hackers can get into your computer in various ways, such as via emails. Once in, they can steal data and plant malicious code as they please – and they can use your infected computer to gain access to your various accounts by finding passwords and usernames.
Therefore, we recommend that you use antivirus and regularly scan your computer (or other devices you use for accessing your one.com Control Panel) for malicious content. That way, you can ensure that hackers won’t use your local device to gain access to your one.com account.
