In this article, we explain what happens during the transfer of your domain to one.com and what you can do to prepare your web space, to use your time efficiently.
When you transfer a domain, only the domain is moved. For example, you must put your website on the web space with us or build a new website, and also set up the e-mail addresses again.
Once the web hosting subscription with us is activated, and you have access to the one.com Control Panel, you can already get started. Usually, the domain itself has not yet been transferred at that time.
Note: Keep in mind that it takes time for a domain transfer to be completed and all servers are active availble to use. The exact time for this is hard to determine.
In the guide When will my web space be active and website online? we explain this in more detail.

Create email accounts
The email accounts on your domain can be created again, as soon as you have access to the one.com Control Panel. Email accounts are supported on our Email Essential plan and larger plans.
Keep in mind that you won't be able to receive and send emails via our servers until the (mail)server is active with us and propagated. To access your email, you can use our Webmail service, one of our Microsoft Exchange products or an email client (another email software).
Are you using an email client?
If you use an email client, for example, Outlook, Gmail or Mail, don't forget to change the settings in your client, after the servers are active with us. If you need help with this, check out our list of guides about setting up email for specific email clients.
Tip: We recommend using IMAP, instead of POP3, to avoid mails and folders getting lost when synchronizing.

Start building with Website Builder
Also, when you have access to the one.com Control Panel, our Website Builder will be available to start building, if you want to build a new website.
Publishing the site should work, but the site will not be visible online until the domain's name servers are propagated to us.
For a complete overview of guides, check out the following section for Website Builder in our extensive help section:
Websites with other CMS, e.g. WordPress
New WordPress site
If you want to create a fresh or new WordPress site, it is only possible to start after the servers are active and propagated to us. Use this time to look through our dedicated section with WordPress guides.
Check your hosting plan to see if it includes our WordPress 1-click tool, for a quick and easy WordPress installation. If you want to change your hosting plan, please see our step-by-step guide: How can I downgrade or upgrade my subscription?
Transfer a webspace via SFTP
As long as the domain is not yet hosted at one.com, you can't log in to FTP or SFTP. Instead, you can temporarily use the internal SFTP address, called the access proxy server, as Host, of your web space.
You can request this address by contacting our online chat support. With this address, you can already log in to SFTP, and upload your website files to the web space.
Tip: Using WordPress? Consider adding the one.com Managed WordPress. This add-on offers you: access to additional plugins, easier maintenance, high performance, optimised security as well as priority support.

one.com File Manager
The one.com File Manager is a tool for administrating files on your web space. It's available once the domain has actually been moved and the name servers with us are active. But, start prepared and take this time to read through our specified guide about the one.com File Manager.
When using database(s), you can ask for an export from your current provider. We recommend exporting only the relevant tables, instead of the entire database.
With us, you can import the file into the open-source tool "phpMyAdmin" via the one.com Control Panel under PHP and database.
Note: If the file is larger than 200 MB, it can only be imported to us, after transfer of the domain is completed, via the free program MySQLdumper: http://www.mysqldumper.net
If you want to continue or start using custom DNS records, we recommend creating them already in the DNS settings for your domain. Also accessible via the Control Panel.
Custom DNS records will be activated once the domain is set to our name server and propagated.
Tip: Create an SPF record as precaution for email account(s) on your domain
